EDUCATION POLICY IN THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE IN REGARD TO THE COLONISTS AND ITS IMPACT OF THE BULGARIANS IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY

Abstract:
The article examines the reforms in the Russian Empire in regards to education in the nineteenth century and their influence on education background and literacy among Bulgarian colonists. The article uses information from a number of works published in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, containing historical and statistical information on the placement of Bulgarians within the Empire. It is based also on the analyses of the Russian Imperial Census of 1897. It contains information on the Bessarabia Governorate, Taurida Governorate and Kherson Governorate, densely populated by Bulgarians. In the late 19th century the Bulgarians were known as illiterate people. The work represents some aspects of in the Russian education policy that influenced the literacy of the Bulgarian population in the Empire.

TEMPORARY LABOUR MIGRATIONS OF BULGARIANS TO LIBYA IN THE 1970S

Abstract:
The article analyses the circumstances of formation (and acceptance) of labour groups from Bulgaria in Libya, the contractual terms and their implementation, the profile of the personnel recruited for work in Libya, as well as the achievements and failures regarding the accomplishment of the global goals pursued by the Bulgarian government through the period of conducting this kind of activity in Libya. The chronological scope of the study - the 1970s - covers the period of the Muammar Gaddafi regime’s asscention with the corresponding good opportunities for implementing its economic and social plans before the economic stagnation in the Middle East and Libya in the following decade, coupled with a search in Sofia for ways to promote Bulgaria’s economic development during the period of détente.

Over the last few years, migratory processes have been tangible to the demographic and economic development of the European Union and Bulgaria in particular. The main problems faced by the country are the integration of migrants into the economy. The text presents two cases from the recent past of the relations of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria with labor migrants from Vietnam and Nicaragua.

INTERNAL MIGRATION OF NATIVE-BORN POPULATION IN BULGARIA IN 1910–1934 IN THE LIGHT OF CENSUS DATA

Abstract:
This study еxamines the internal migration of the native-born population in Bulgaria between 1910 and 1934. Its volume and dynamics, gender and ethnic specificities, distance, directions and spatial orientation are revealed by quantitative analysis of the statistical information on the birth place of the native-born population in Bulgaria, drawn from the four censuses realized during the period under consideration. Due to the lack of current statistics on settlements and displacements, they are an indispensable historical source of spatial mobility within the country.

SOFIA STUDENTS’ TEMPERANCE SOCIETY – ESTABLISHMENT AND ACTIVITY IN RELATION WITH THE REDUCTION OF POPULATION MORTALITY IN BULGARIA (1922-1939)

Abstract:
This article introduces the Sofia Students’ Temperance Society (SSTS) in the context of the struggle for reduction of the mortality of the Bulgarian population in the years between the two world wars. In this connection the ideas, organization and popularity of the SSTS are being investigated, as well as its impact on the reduction of the mortality of the population in the country. The research is based predominantly on information taken out of memories the SSTS activists, from materials of the society itself as well as on data collected in the archives of the Ministry of Interior.
